Peter Zappala



Sumter, SC …….. Peter Alexander Zappala, age 59, beloved husband of 34 years to Maura Zappala, died on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at his residence.

Born in Camp Lejeune, NC, he was the son of Delima A. Atwell and the late William Joseph Sawn. Peter was an extremely proud and intelligent man with a quick sense of humor. He mastered the English language and was a strong-willed teacher of life for his family. He loved all animals, especially dogs.

Peter served proudly in the United States Air Force and retired in 1994. He was a crew chief and was a perfectionist in his work. He traveled the world throughout his career and survived the eruption of the Mt. Pinatubo Volcano in 1991. The evacuation of the base in the Philippines brought Peter to Sumter. After his service in the military, he worked as a corrections officer for over 10 years. Peter will be remembered as loving husband, son, father, brother, grandfather and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are: three children, Peter Alexander Zappala, II of Sumter, Leah Moore and her husband James of Belton and Joseph John Moschetto and his wife Carrie of Virginia; two sisters, Deanna Stiffler of Roswell, GA and Kathleen Frady of Brevard, NC and five grandchildren, Peyton Edwards, Daniel Moore, Justin Moore, Logan Moschetto and Joseph Moschetto.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 3:00 pm in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 2-3 pm on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Bullock Funeral Home.
