Obituary

Sumter, SC…Donald Thomas Spitzer, age 85, beloved husband of the late Margaret “Peggy” Lucille Steen Spitzer, died on January 8, 2018 in Bakersfield, CA.

Born in Lafollette, TN, he was the son of the late Ralph Spitzer and Chloe Broyles Spitzer. Mr. Spitzer served his country in the US Air Force for 26 years on active duty and for an additional 31 years in Civil Service. He was the longest serving Fire Chief in the Department of Defense history. While serving his country, he received the Outstanding Civilian Career Service award from the Department of Air Force and received a congratulatory letter from President George W. Bush on the occasion of his retirement.

Don was fun loving and known for his skill at everything from bowling and shooting pool, to any kind of cards, especially if he could win your money. Don was an avid golfer and twice shot a Hole in One. He was well loved and admired by his friends and family and will be greatly missed.

Surviving are: one son, Wayne Spitzer and his wife Ginger of Atlanta, GA; three daughters, Sue Goff and her husband Mike of Fayetteville, NC, Donna Magee and her husband Chuck of Bakersfield, CA, and Karen Harvey and her husband Dennis of Bakersfield, CA; three brothers, Keith Spitzer and his wife Shirley of Versailles, OH; Kenny Spitzer and his wife Joyce of Versailles, OH; Errol Spitzer and his wife Linda of McMinville, TN; three sisters, Shelvia Mock and her husband Norman of Union City, IN; Nell Rose Smith of Union City, IN; Reba Richmond and her husband Chester of McMinville, TN; one sister-in-law, Ruth Spitzer of Fairborn, OH; eight grandchildren, Michael Goff, Aaron Goff, Shawn Davis, James Harvey, Lissa Harvey, Jessica Spitzer, Jake Spitzer, and Hannah Spitzer and five great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Von Spitzer; and his sister, Lorena Spitzer.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 1:00 pm at the First Church of God in Sumter 1835 Camden Highway, Sumter, SC with Fire Department Honors. Interment will be held at a later date in the Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 27, 2018, two hours prior to the service, from 11:00 am –1:00 pm at the First Church of God.

Honorary pallbearers will be Col. (Ret.) Frank Destadio, Col. (Ret.) Ed Henson, Chuck Porter, Bob Lemon, Judy Lemon, Hank Hurley, Steve Tipton, Grover Smith, Willie Godfrey, Benny Hodge, Terry Madewell and the Men and Women of the Shaw Fire Department.
