Thomas Lee Ross, Jr.



Hopkins, SC…Colonel Thomas Lee Ross, Jr., USAF, Retired, 74, died Wednesday, July 26th, 2017, from respiratory failure at MUSC in Charleston, SC. Tom was recently diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis in May 2017.

Thomas was born February 13th, 1943 in Sumter, SC. Also, known to some as Tommy Lee. Tom grew up in Dalzell, SC where he met many of his long-term friends he still cherishes today. Tom graduated from Hillcrest High School in Dalzell, SC. He played college baseball at Spartanburg Methodist College and later at Auburn University, where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. Auburn’s team success led them to the Omaha College World Series. He achieved his Master’s Degree in Accounting from St. Mary’s University, San Antonio, TX. Tom married Margaret Ann Keating of Sioux City, Iowa in 1969. His career was in the United States Air Force for 26 years. Tom’s time in the service allowed him and his family to travel throughout the country. He was decorated as a full Colonel and retired in 1995. Tom and Margaret moved to Hopkins, SC in 1995 where he worked at the USC School of Medicine. Tom worked on special projects until 2012 when he retired. Tom cherished living on Ross Farms taking care of his animals and beautifying his home.

Tom loved helping people and was known for his unconditional love he shared with his friends and family. In addition, he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved his Uncle William James Ross, who was like a father to him. Tom always enjoyed planning and seeing his classmates at the Hillcrest High School reunions and watching Fox News.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his daughter, Tracy Lynn Ervin and her husband Dr. Michael Ervin of Columbia, SC; his son, Thomas Ross III and his wife, Tara of Omaha, NE; five grandchildren, Sydney Ross, Thomas Ross IV, Parker Ervin, Preston Ervin and Adelina Ross.

He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas Lee Ross Sr. and Willie Belle Goff and his stepdad, Donald Goff.

The Celebration of Life will be Saturday, July 29th, 2017 at 11:00 am in the Bullock Funeral Home, 1190 Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC. The entombment will be at the Resurrection Cemetery, Holy Angels Mausoleum, 7800 W Center Road, Omaha, NE at a later date. The mausoleum was chosen to surround Tom with loved ones for eternal rest.

The family will receive friends on Friday, July 28, 2017 from 6:00 pm- 8:00 pm at Bullock Funeral Home.
